Lake County Discovery Museum
Tucked away in the southwest corner of Lake County is a hidden gem - the Lake County Discovery Museum. Located on Rt 176 just west of Hwys 83 and 60 you’ll find this wonderful museum of Lake County.
What I noticed first was the wonderful grounds and lovely scenery. My daughter and I sat by the pond for a few minutes. We watched the geese and listened to the birds before we even entered museum. I could spend the afternoon just walking the grounds and looking at the interesting sculptures and landscape, it’s just beautiful.
When entering the building you will be in the gift shop, to the left is the Lake County Museum. Special exhibits are to the right. You’ll be fascinated by the nations largest permanent exhibit of postcards which is to the right of the gift shop.
Honestly, I never really knew much about the history of Lake County, even though I’ve lived and worked here for over 10 years and have family in the area. Before Six Flags and Gurnee Mills, Lake County was a very popular tourist destination for the outdoors and natural resources. There are many displays and items to look at, our favorites were the boat ride and the roller coaster film.

You can take a “boat ride” through the lotus fields on Grass Lake. Until the 1980’s the lotus fields had been almost eradicated due to mainly harvesting and tourism. These fields were widely popular tourist destinations and are now being cared for to make a comeback.
Another great exhibit is the “roller coater” ride through history. This was really neat, entertaining and informative. Everyone has their own roller coaster seat in the theater and three screens offer plenty of visual effects. Go all the way back to the Ice Age and time travel through time to modern day in Lake County. And you’ll find out what’s with the funky tree sculpture in front of the museum!
The museum does a wonderful job of bringing together all the elements that make Lake County special within the exhibits.

Our journey through the museum had come to an end and we found ourselves back in the gift shop. One of my purchases was some of the Audubon Birds for my sons collection. The Discovery Museum also has a wide selection of history books about the different areas in Lake County. These are a great gift for the difficult-to-buy-for-person on your list. The gift shop isn’t huge, but they do have a very nice selection. The staff is great too. If you visit on Tuesdays, the admission is only $3.00 and free for those 17 and under! Parking is free everyday. Go to the web site and get a $1.00 off admission coupon too.

Overall, we really enjoyed our visit to the Lake County Discovery Museum. If you live in or are just visiting Lake County, this is a must see. What a discovery it is!

Gurnee Mills Shopping
Summer flew by, we are in the midst of fall and out of no where the holidays are upon us. Each evening I notice more and more houses with Christmas decorations out and am shocked at how quickly it’s coming up this year.

We spent a day at Gurnee Mills, hoping to make a dent in our holiday shopping. When we walked into the mall, the entranceway was filled with Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling. There were wreaths hung here and there and other holiday decorations. I’ve shopped at Gurnee Mills before, however, I usually just run in and out and hit the shops right near that entrance. Today I decided to walk as much of the mall as I could. I discovered so many more places than I realized were there.
There are hundreds of stores for shopping. Any apparel or specialty items are sure to be found somewhere in the mall. There is also a big food court, several restaurants and much, much more! Not only did we make a huge dent in our shopping, we also got some great deals and felt like we saved a lot of money. All the items we bought showed the regular full price of the item, along with the discounted price. I liked being able to see what my savings were.

The great thing about Gurnee Mills is that you truly can make a day out of it. There is so much to do for the whole family. Not only is the shopping great, there is also a movie theatre, Rink Side (a full size skating rink), and a huge arcade. Throughout the mall there are fun things too which can help perk up the kids. Right by the food court is a merry-go-round and there are also other little rides throughout the mall that I noticed for the kids.

If you are exhausted from all of the walking and shopping and need a little break, there are a couple rows of massage chairs that you can sit in and gain a little pick me up from.
When we were done shopping, we decided to have dinner at the Rain Forest Café which is a great spot for the family. The food was great, there was a lot to see and it was all around an entertaining meal.

We left Gurnee Mills feeling like we not only got a lot accomplished, but also had a fun day. We were able to get a lot of our shopping done, get into the holiday spirit and have fun at the same time.

Lake County Discovery Museum: Pocketbook Anthropology - A Treasure of Handbags
Pocketbooks are a fashion statement with a purpose. It is possible to be functional and very fashionable at the same time. The Lake County Discovery Museum is hosting the Pocketbook Anthropology: A treasure of Handbags now thru January 20th.

Upon entering the exhibit, I first noticed the vintage dresses and pocketbooks on display. It really got me thinking about women and fashion. We have come a long way when it comes to clothing, but the pocketbook seems to remain timeless within this exhibit. Pocketbooks displayed here are truly a work of art.
All are beautiful; my favorites are the embroidered handbags. Such detail and painstaking work went into creating a pocketbook. Some are classy, like the beautifully beaded clutches. My fave is from the early 1900’s, it is timeless.

Some are whimsical, like the Titanic purse. My daughter loves the “big boat”, it is a replica of the actual Titanic ship as a pocketbook! And almost all are downright unique. One pocketbook is made out entirely of cigarette packs. The alligator pocketbook has the actual feet attached! There is something you don’t see everyday.

The Gift Shop has a wonderful selection of unique handmade pocketbooks you can take home and make your own fashion statement. My daughter chose a child’s pocketbook that looks like a horse, it is very cute.

Visit the exhibit for an afternoon of fun and learn a bit of history of what makes a pocketbook fashionable. This one is for the ladies of all ages to enjoy!

Keylime Cove Sneak Preview by: Jesse Mendoza
Keylime Cove Sneak Preview
By Jesse Mendoza

I can say one thing right of the bat- this thing is going to be HUGE.

The resort is scheduled to open its doors to the public on February 29, 2008, and features over 400 resort-style suites and staterooms, a 6000 square-foot state of the art arcade and entertainment center, two new restaurant concepts including DW Anderson’s Eatery & Ice Cream Parlor and the Crazy Toucan Margarita Grill, a luxurious KeyLime Cove spa and treatment rooms, and of course the 65,000 square foot tropical themed, indoor water park.

Walking into what would appear to be the front entrance of the building still under construction, you can begin to see the sheer size of this massive structure. I could already hear the excited screams of giddy children, the sound of rushing water, and the chatter of happy families enjoying a day indoors – at a water park! And In Gurnee!

Keylime Cove’s visionary, “Famous” Dave Anderson, award-winning restaurateur, and the man behind great restaurants such as Famous Dave’s Barbecue, and Rainforest Café, was our gracious tour guide and was nice enough to talk to us for a minute about his vision for the grand resort- a place where families can escape the daily grind of life right in their own back yard, where children and adults alike can enjoy some relaxation without having to worry about crummy weather and big crowds.

We were then walked over to the area where the resort will present guests with an indoor water park encompassing 65,000 square feet. We can already see the lazy river and the wave pool taking shape. Dave also pointed to holes in the outer walls that will send tube riders through long water-filled tubes from inside the park, and then outside, only to dump them back indoors in the pool below. How fun is that!

We moved along to what will become one of the resorts 414, resort-style guest suites, some accommodating up to 12 people. Is that a large screen, HDTV I see in the photo?

One question Kelly and I brought up to Dave is whether or not the resort will have general admission prices for guests who only want to enjoy the water park and not stay in the rooms. Dave’s vision of reserving the use of the water park for staying guests only made sense- to keep long lines to the various attractions low, unlike the lines you see at major outdoor amusement parks. I wholeheartedly agree.

I’m looking forward to opening day, and I can see it being a nice getaway during the winter months when cabin fever gets a good grip on me. There will be no putting away the swimming shorts this coming winter…

…I’ll be sipping a tasty margarita by the pool.
