March in Lake County is a Madness of Fun!
Spring is right around the corner. The sun will now be out a little bit longer and days will be hopefully getting a little warmer. March is a great time to be in Lake County as the snow is continuing to melt and spring events are starting to pick up with the college kids home on spring break, the new Viper Alley in Lincolnshire opening and the Lambs Farm Farmyard is now open for the season.

I am a big college basketball fan and the NCAA has its tournament going on this month, so the Libertyville Sports Complex decided to have its 1st ever Free Throw Challenge. The top 5 people with the highest score in each age bracket for men and woman will advance to the championship round. I decided to give this a try and see if I have what it takes to make the cut. I set my goals pretty low, as I was hoping to hit 50% of them, but knowing that I could do a lot better than that. As you can tell in my video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GY7wd63mTjI&feature=channel_video_title, I actually did pretty well, but unfortunately I did not make the championship round which is on March 20th at the Sports Complex.

Spring is definitely in the air, because the Lambs Farm Farmyard is now open for the season from 10am – 5pm weekends only until April when it’s open daily. Visitors to the farmyard can meet Mrs. Wiggles, the 450 pound pig with an affinity for Bavarian Crème donuts and Oreo Cookies. You can even climb into the petting zoo with the goats, sheep and lambs. The kids will also love a ride on the old-fashioned carousel or train. Or you can see you the best mini golf family member is partaking in a round of mini golf. Spending the afternoon at Lambs Farm is easy to do and the whole family will enjoy it.

A new concert venue, Viper Alley opened last weekend in Lincolnshire. I have yet to check it out but from what I hear it is a great venue. They have live bands and DJs playing nightly Wednesday – Sunday. The venue also has a lounge and some bowling lanes. This is a place that I will have to experience.

Free Throw Competition at the Libertyville Sports Complex

I recently participated in the 1st ever Libertyville Sports Complex Free Throw competition. The Libertyville Sports Complex is located at corner of Peterson Rd and US Hwy 45. The competition costs $5 for 10 Free Throws (plus 2 practice shots), and runs through the week of March 6. There are different age divisions for men and women. The top 5 scorers in each division will advance to the championship round on March 20. I am told they will have bleachers set up so your family and friends can come watch and cheer you on.

I remember when I was little I would shoot free throws and play basketball in the driveway until it got dark and my parents told me to come in; so I thought I would do ok at this. Now, I have not played basketball or shot a basketball in about a year so there was a little rust. A free throw is something that everyone can do, so I was not worried about it, I just did not want to shoot air balls, as that would be embarrassing. I set my goals pretty low, as I was hoping to hit 50% of them, but knowing that I could do a lot better than that. Once I shook off the rust and found my rhythm it was pretty easy.

The Libertyville Sports Complex has a lot of things for visitors and area residents, like a rock climbing wall, a heated driving range, fitness center, soccer fields, batting cages and more. I will be stopping back out at the Sports Complex to check out the fitness center and the driving range to get ready for the golf season. On this day though, I only did the Free Throw Challenge. What a great concept I might add, as the College Basketball Tournament will be starting shortly, which is one of my favorite times of the year.
