Wildlife Discovery Museum
We were looking for something new and different to do on a Saturday so we decided to visit the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest. I’ve heard from other parents about their large snake collection. Later I found out that they have the largest snake exhibit in the nation! So we set out on a Saturday morning. The Wildlife Discovery Center is easy to find, on Middlefork Rd in Lake Forest, just off of Waukegan Rd. They are currently expanding and under a massive construction project. I really wasn’t sure where to go once we got there, but some very helpful construction workers helped us find our way. Once inside, we found what we came to see.
We were greeted by a woman named Rachel who was holding a red snake. She asked if we wanted to touch the snake, we all declined but were never-the-less interested. Rachel was informative and guided us through our visit. She told us a little bit about each animal and answered all of our questions. She was great with the kids, showing them the different species and making it fun for them.
What I liked most of all at the Wildlife Discovery Center was how up close and personal we could get with the animals. Only about an inch of glass separated us from these creatures. My kids LOVED the huge snakes! These monsters can easily devour a cat or small dog with little trouble! We also saw a small alligator that was really cool. He was in the water watching with just his eyes and nose above the water, just like you see in the movies! There was small fish in the water and we were just waiting for him to snap one up!
The Wildlife Discovery Center is not a huge place, but it is packed full of all kinds of snakes, turtles, and other reptiles. The staff is right there to personally answer your questions and tell you about each species. I really liked that, you can’t find this at a zoo. We wanted to see the venomous snakes but they were unavailable when we visited. That was a bit disappointing, but it gives us a reason to return! I look forward to visiting their gardens in the spring and taking a nature hike in the summer. They also offer classes and birthday parties for kids. Something to think about for my sons’ birthday party this summer.
One tip when visiting; hours are very limited, closed Sundays and Fridays and open the rest of the days of the week from 10am-1pm. If you like Serpent Safari at the mall, you’ll love the Wildlife Discovery Center!

Let's Wine about Winter
I don’t recall a winter this snowy in awhile. I think a lot of us are getting cabin fever and itching to get out of our houses and get outdoors. Luckily we had a little relief with the weather on Saturday. Although it was still chilly, it was mild compared to the recent temperatures. We were able to get out to the “Let’s Wine About Winter” festival in Libertyville and enjoy the “nice” weather and learn a little about downtown Libertyville.

We’ve been to a few of the restaurants in Libertyville, however, I’ve never really gone into many of the stores. There are a lot more shops than I ever realized or noticed. It was fun to go from store to store, look around a little and have a drink. The participating stores or restaurants had a sign on their doors that said “stop in for refreshments”. There were 23 participating locations. Each stop had something different. Wines, sangria, beer, juices, tea and many places had appetizers or little snacks.
I really enjoyed our stops into a couple of the boutiques. YaYa’s Boutique is a cute shop with a lot of unique clothing and jewelry. They also had taco dip which I dug into while we stopped in there. Another store we stopped into was My Girlfriends Closet. This is a boutique with nice clothes and accessories. I also noticed the Pencil Portraits they had displayed. An artist turns photographs into portraits and cards and they are gorgeous – such a great gift idea that I hope to use.
There were several restaurants included. One place that we liked was the restaurant Trattoria Pomigliano. This is a nice Italian restaurant. While we were in there, we checked out the menu and ended up going back for dinner. The food is delicious and it has a nice atmosphere as well. We also stopped into Henry Yee’s Restaurant. This is definitely a place we plan to return to eat at; the people we spoke to while we were in there gave the food rave reviews.

All along the main strip of Libertyville people were walking in and out of stores carrying their wine glasses. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. I hadn’t seen this many people out and about since the fall!

Downtown Libertyville is such a quaint, yet fun area. There is a movie theatre, numerous restaurants, bars and a lot of shops and boutiques. “Let’s Wine About Winter” was a great excuse to check-out the area and drink and snack at the same time! We really enjoyed our afternoon and left with a list of several restaurants that we wanted to eat at in the future and vowed to return to do some shopping at the cute stores we discovered along the way.

Sledding On Lake County Forest Preserves
In my opinion, it’s just not really winter without the snow. The cold I could do without, but there are so many great things to do in the fluffy white stuff – and we have plenty this winter! My favorite snow activity is taking my kids sledding. Some of the best memories I have as a child are when my older aunts and uncles would take me with them – that was great!
My son had a day off school and we went to try out the sledding hill at the Lakewood Forest Preserve. The sledding hill is located in the Winter Sports Area just south of 176 on Fairfield Road in Wauconda. We arrived about 10:30am and we were the only ones there. We did see some people getting ready to cross country ski – the trails looked in prime shape and I can bet the scenery is awesome. The sledding hill was looked good too, there was however a lot of ice on the sidewalk which makes it kind of tricky carrying a huge snow tube, but it’s not too bad. My son, the daredevil, just couldn’t wait and flew down the hill and I could hear him laughing the whole way down! I then went with my daughter, she loved it! What a great hill for sledding! Steep enough to really get you going but not too steep where you would lose control. There is also plenty of room at the bottom for slowing down and stopping. It is a pretty fast hill and well packed. The ride down is so worth the walk up the hill. We went a few more times before we were tired. I would recommend a huge snow tube on this hill - that by far was our favorite. No toboggans, snowboards or metal runner are allowed, for obvious reasons. There is also a bathroom at the top of the hill, which is very nice to have. The scenery is beautiful, especially after a snow fall.
My advice when sledding at Lakewood, get there early on the weekends when it can get pretty busy. We were the only people when we got there but as we were leaving we could see sledders arriving. Lakewood is one of the better sledding hills we’ve tried, good size hill and well kept. I will definitely return before the snow melts!

Long Grove Confectionery
Everyone loves chocolate, right? I know I do! As much as I eat chocolate though, I never really thought about what goes into making it. On Saturday my husband and I took our daughter Reese to take a tour of the Long Grove Confectionery. On this tour we learned all about the process.
We began our tour learning about how chocolate is actually grown. We were surprised to hear that chocolate actually grows on trees. From there we walked through a long hallway and got to see the step-by-step process of making the chocolate. There are large windows that look into each area. Each step of the way there is a short video that describes the tasks that take place in that particular spot. It is so amazing how much time and detail goes into each piece of chocolate.

One of the neatest things we saw were numerous sculptures made out of 100% chocolate. There was a huge Santa Claus, a couple patriotic pieces made after 9/11, paintings on the wall, huge bunnies, etc. They have an artist that works with them and creates these sculptures for events and to place around the confectionery. Reese was in awe over the huge pizza sculpture.
Even though it was only 10am, we were craving chocolate after the tour was completed. Everyone who takes the tour gets a gift bag at the end. We got chocolate covered rice crispy treats which we promptly dug into! The tour ended in the factory store. We walked around and picked up a few items. They have anything and everything you could ever dream of made out of chocolate. They even had several different samples to try.

We truly enjoyed the tour and learning so much more about the process. Our tour guide, Kay, made our experience even more enjoyable. Now when we eat chocolate, we have a better appreciation for just how it came to be. We left the tour and headed home…hoping Reese’s sugar high would subside by the time we reached our house!
