Lake County Discovery Museum: Pocketbook Anthropology - A Treasure of Handbags
Pocketbooks are a fashion statement with a purpose. It is possible to be functional and very fashionable at the same time. The Lake County Discovery Museum is hosting the Pocketbook Anthropology: A treasure of Handbags now thru January 20th.

Upon entering the exhibit, I first noticed the vintage dresses and pocketbooks on display. It really got me thinking about women and fashion. We have come a long way when it comes to clothing, but the pocketbook seems to remain timeless within this exhibit. Pocketbooks displayed here are truly a work of art.
All are beautiful; my favorites are the embroidered handbags. Such detail and painstaking work went into creating a pocketbook. Some are classy, like the beautifully beaded clutches. My fave is from the early 1900’s, it is timeless.

Some are whimsical, like the Titanic purse. My daughter loves the “big boat”, it is a replica of the actual Titanic ship as a pocketbook! And almost all are downright unique. One pocketbook is made out entirely of cigarette packs. The alligator pocketbook has the actual feet attached! There is something you don’t see everyday.

The Gift Shop has a wonderful selection of unique handmade pocketbooks you can take home and make your own fashion statement. My daughter chose a child’s pocketbook that looks like a horse, it is very cute.

Visit the exhibit for an afternoon of fun and learn a bit of history of what makes a pocketbook fashionable. This one is for the ladies of all ages to enjoy!
